ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)
A manufacturing model where the factory supplies its own existing product designs, which the buyer can customize lightly and sell under its brand.
TL;DR: ODM means the factory offers products it has already designed. The buyer picks a design, makes limited changes such as color, size, or logo, and sells it under its own brand.
ODM is sometimes called white label or private label manufacturing. Because the design, molds, and production process already exist, the buyer skips most development work. This usually means faster sampling, lower setup costs, and often a lower MOQ than a full custom project.
The trade-off is uniqueness and ownership. The factory normally keeps the rights to the base design and may sell the same or similar products to other buyers. If exclusivity matters to you, ask about it directly and put any agreement in writing, including the markets and time period it covers.
Compare ODM with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), where the buyer supplies the design and specifications. Many real projects sit between the two. For example, a buyer may start from a supplier’s standard pattern or color range and then request custom sizes or an adapted layout.
When sourcing ODM products from China, ask for the factory’s catalog, test reports if relevant, and samples of the exact items you plan to order. Confirm in writing which details can change and which are fixed, and approve a PPS (Pre-Production Sample) before mass production so the final goods match what you selected.
